Unlocking Potential: A new project supporting local looked after and disadvantaged children

C+K are looking to work with employers in Kirklees and the surrounding areas on a new project supporting looked after and disadvantaged children.

Looked after children and young people can miss out on the networking opportunities and links to employers that others may make through their parents and wider family networks. This can limit the opportunities available to them. C+K want to give all young people the chance to succeed. We are keen to raise the aspirations of looked after children by working with employers who can provide opportunities for them to gain experience of the workplace. These opportunities can make a big difference.

For looked after children and disadvantaged young people, accessing workplace opportunities can be a life-changing step.

Workplace experiences play a vital role in understanding and building the employability skills of young people. These experiences teach the importance of practical skills such as teamwork, communication, time management, and problem-solving, all of which are essential skills in the workforce. They also offer exposure to workplace cultures, routines, and expectations, helping young people gain a clearer understanding of professional environments. For many, this is their first opportunity to see how their talents and interests align with real-world careers, giving them the confidence to aim higher.

Workplace tours and the opportunity to get involved in tasks, help to develop and enhance practical skills, confidence, and start to build networks of professional contacts, which are invaluable when entering the job market.

Employers, in turn, gain significant benefits from offering such opportunities. Young people bring fresh energy, diverse perspectives, and creativity into the workplace. Their resilience and determination to overcome personal challenges often translates into strong work ethics and innovative thinking. Moreover, employers who actively support disadvantaged youth demonstrate social responsibility, enhance their community reputation, and contribute to fostering a more inclusive society.

Activities can range from a short online presentation or a Q&A session, to an onsite talk and tour of the workplace, work experience activities and projects. We’d be happy to hear any ideas and suggestions from employers wishing to get involved.

If you would like to discuss this opportunity and the different ways you can be involved, without any obligation, please email kirstie.walker@ckcareers.org.uk or susan.stewart@ckcareers.org.uk.  We look forward to working with you to support the young people of Kirklees.
