Following the success of C&K Careers Summer Internship programmes in Calderdale and Kirklees over the past 4 years, Kirklees and Calderdale Councils re-commissioned C&K Careers to deliver Internship programmes during the summer of 2019. This year we also worked with Wakefield Council delivering the programme to young people in the Wakefield area. Focusing on developing employability skills for under 16s, Year 10 students from Calderdale, Kirklees and Wakefield schools were invited to participate in the three programmes.
Each programme is designed to raise awareness of the wide range of post 16 careers options available, provide knowledge and greater understanding of the work environment and develop employability skills to support future employment. Working closely with employers in the local region all of the students involved had the opportunity to experience a work placement for one week. Prior to their placement C&K Careers Advisers delivered a week of employability workshops to the students taking part to help to prepare they for the world of work. The workshops engaged students through fun and interactive activities including speed interviewing thus improving their employment prospects in the longer term.
Students went on work placements in a range of job areas including:
- Motor Vehicle
- Digital Technologies
- Hair and Beauty
- Graphic Design
- Business Administration
- Health and Social Care
- Medicine and Health Care
We received some excellent feedback from our students, parents and employers about the programme. Parents comments included
‘‘An absolutely amazing way to utilise the summer break’’
‘’The employer was amazing and my daughters’ timetable was tailored to suit her aspirations. Gained confidence and experience, as well as great future contacts for references”
All students and their parents and carers across the three Internship programmes were invited to attend a celebration event in recognition of their achievements. All participating employers, Council Managers. C&K Careers staff who worked on the programme and senior representatives from schools were also invited. At the celebration events students and employers heard about the programme and were presented with a certificate to recognize their participation. We have learnt that 2 students from our Wakefield programme have since been offered apprenticeships with their Internship employers!
We would like to congratulate all out interns once again and thank all the employers, council managers, schools, parents and carers that made these programmes such a huge success. We are already looking forwad to working with our next group of interns in 2020!
