Following the huge success of our 2014 project, the summer internship programme got even bigger.in 2015, with Year 10 students from 6 Barnsley schools completing this year's summer internship, helped by 47 local businesses from a range of sectors.
Barnsley employers got behind the project, offering work placements for one week over the summer to students, who gave up their summer holidays to gain valuable workplace skills.
C&K Careers staff worked on tailoring the workshops, which prepared students for their placements, around individual students needs. At the end of the project students had a five year plan to help them on their 'career' journey.
All students got fully involved with the programme and showed enthusiasm, commitment and bravery to put themselves into unfamiliar situations; and the experience has enabled them to understand the workplace and start to think about their futures.
It has made me more optimistic, all the doors in my brain have opened." Student on the programme.
"J has been an asset to the reserve in the short time he has been here. He is interested, articulate and very capable in all he does. He is a credit to his school and the project. He is welcome to join us as a volunteer any time. We’d like to thank him for all his hard work.” Barnsley employer.
C&K Careers organised two celebration evenings to showcase the students' achievements
"The whole evening was lovely, and it was a real privilege to see the young people and their parents and to see how much everyone had got from the programme. As a ‘backroom’ person, I often don’t get the chance to see the real impact on the ground for myself, so it was a real treat.
Thanks should also go to the many staff who helped to make the programme such a success – we really appreciate it and you’ve all been a pleasure to work with. ." Kate Faulkes, South Area Council Manager.
